Hey dude, why does DIY filmmaking suck?

  • Yes Beavis, DIY filmmaking literally does suck.

    Let me tell you about my experience producing Quality of Life.

    Each day, I worked a full-time day job and then put in 4 - 8 hours more on the film at night. I still declared personal bankruptcy during pre-production.

    Then I was fired from my job for focusing on the film too much instead of my work.

    My girlfriend nearly left me since she never saw me.

    My friends stopped returning my calls for fear I'd ask for favors for the film.

    And in the end, the entire "indiewood" film industry basically ignored us. Sundance, the speciality distributors, the major indie film press outlets and of course just about anyone with money couldn't be bothered.

    And that was all before we decided to self-distribute the movie and things really got rough.

    So listen up: DIY filmmaking is not for the faint of heart. It sucks.

Preview new indie sci-fi at WonderCon

Join us at WonderCon in San Francisco for a sneak peak at a number of upcoming and in production indie sci-fi films, moderated by our own DJ Bad Vegan (that's me -- I get sick pleasure from writing in the third person plural).

Please join us and tell all your Bay Area sci-fi friends to come on by. Last year, we got swamped; it was standing-room only, so show up early to get a seat!

The most innovative sci-fi movies aren't from Hollywood, but from the exploding indie/DIY sci-fi film movement. Get a sneak peek at clips from upcoming indie sci-fi projects with filmmakers DJ Bad Vegan (In-World War), Henry Barrial (Pig), Kip Rasmussen (95ers:ECHOES) and other special guests.

That's right, we'll even have a small preview clip or two of raw footage from In-World War, the indie sci-fi feature we keep talking about (currently in post).

Wow, we are such big fans of Sci-Fi and classic monster movies. So much so, we started up our own Indie film business a few years back called Big Tex Movin' pictures. As you can guess, we're down here in Texas. Our first movie's just hitting Amazon at: http://www.amazon.com/Color-Blood-William-B-Hughes/dp/B0057J2JBM/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1309628804&sr=8-1 It's called The Color of Blood and it's full of pretty girls, creepy settings and one crazy new monster. The story surrounds a bunch of young artists, trying to make their names, and the trouble they get into when they start working for Zorasian Gallery. This Zorasian guy is actually an Aztec Vampire and you know what trouble that leads to!

Our next film is Matt Mercury and His Rocket Rangers. It'll be our feature length version of an award-winning short film http://vimeo.com/21527211

Matt Mercury will be great fun to make and even more fun to watch, at least for fans of the good old days of final frontiers, mad super-genius' and alien a'plenty!
